In this article, K.baldwin talks about the different stereotypes of the mixed race. She talks about all the misconceptions that mixed people get from their white and black heritages. She knows that it does not make them comfortable at all, but she addresses these stereotypes because she wants people to know how they feel when they get asked or already assumed about something. I know that it can be challenging and uncomfortable for the mixed race, because I am mixed and have to face these challenges most of the time when going out with my family in public. I have an all white family and I’m practically the only one of color in my family. “That because you are mixed race you will automatically become popular when it comes to dating,” is one of the stereotypes listed on Baldwin’s article and it is a fairly true statement. In today’s time, white girls/boys and black girls/boys always go for the lighter skin guys/girls. Mixed race people are looked at to be very popular in this situation because they are both white and black, so white girls/boys parents will accept them more that they have like 50% of white in them. We know that the mixed race is looked at to be cuter than other races because they have that even skin tone between their two heritages. Some people even fall for the mixed race because of the hair that they have and I know that hair can be very attractive in today’s time. “Mixed race people don’t experience racism,” is a biased statement or stereotype because some do receive racism that are leaning more towards their black side. Even though, they have two heritages to them they still have to deal with the idea of getting pulled back and forth towards both sides of racism. In today’s time, more mixed race people lean on their black side so they experience more racism and they know what it’s like to be called a “nigga.” Also, if you actually think about it mixed race people usually hang around black people because they feel they can interact with them more and keep a conversation going. So, mixed race people actually do receive racist slurs but they may not receive as many as black or white peoples do
“There is something innately and superior about being mixed race,” I will have to disagree with this statement because being mixed is nothing special to me. I say this because all people are the same to me and we are all made evenly, therefore we have nothing special to our name. Mixed race people may get this statement because they have two heritages so they can show two sides of themselves. In reality, mixed people rarely show both sides of their heritages they usually just pick one and stick with it. ”What are you?” is a question that most mixed people get on a daily. First of all, I know it is coming off a little rude but it’s actually exactly how people ask the question. I have only gotten asked “what are you mixed with?,” which isn’t too bad as the one stated above.I know that I would get a little offended if someone asked me that way because I would personally feel like I didn’t belong or I didn’t have anywhere to fit in. So, this question should not be asked because it’s a little offending to the mixed race.
“Mixed race people always have one white parent,” is a big stereotypical topic because most mixed race people’s parents stay together. Therefore, they are in juxtaposition to black people because they are known for having parents that stick around. You could also say that this stereotype is wrong because some mixed race parents like dads leave or never come around. So in today’s time, I usually see mostly mixed race people parents not together. However I do see their parents together or if they are not together they are usually still really close or making it for the child. Mixed race children are stereotyped everyday because of their two heritages which makes it way worse for them in many cases. However, some have chosen a side of the two heritages and they have successfully adapted to it. They still may have a little urge for the other side, but they mainly stick to their one side. Many of the mixed races decisions also have something to do with the lifestyle they live at home or they experience. So, mixed race people do not really let these stereotypes affect them because they know that they can depend on two heritages and it doesn’t really matter what other people think of them.
